Job Title Hazardous Material Specialist

Job Summary Establish, operate and manage hazardous materials programs at KAUST, to ensure the safe and proper use, handling, transport, storage and disposal of hazardous materials.
Major Responsibilities
Coordinate with the Chemical warehouse team in the overall management of the hazardous waste operations
Documents and maintain all necessary records associated with waste operations using database, computerized record systems, and standard office programs. This includes hazardous waste manifest, records pertaining to facility operations, transporting/storing materials, and final disposal.
Develop, implement, and revise plans and procedures for the storage, handling and disposal of hazardous materials on campus.
Ensure compliance with gove
ment regulations and file required reports.
Maintain running inventory of laboratory chemicals, biology materials, and supplies to include ordering, dispensing, and disposing of hazardous materials.
Assists with the development of campus policies that support the safe and compliant disposal of chemicals, including monitoring emerging regulations and identifying compliance requirements for campus research activities.
Train faculty, students and staff in the proper handling of hazardous materials
Act in a consulting role with campus administrative units, unit safety contacts, campus emergency responders, individual research groups, and researchers via one-on-one meeting, telephone, email, and service on safety committees.
Develop written guidelines, plans, and standard operating procedures for campus research safety program.
Participate in an advisory role in the 24/7 emergency response program on campus.

Technical Skills
Knowledge of hazardous waste standards, codes, and regulations.
Skill analyzing and evaluating a wide variety of technical data, test results, reports, and plans.
Skill in the operation and maintenance of a variety of radiation monitoring and testing equipment.
Ability to use Microsoft office including word and excel.
Non-Technical Skills or Attributes
Excellent verbal and written skills (English)
Self motivated, able to work independently with limited supervision
Able to work effectively in a culturally diverse work environment
Able to multitask and work productively in a fast paced environment and under emergency situations.
Required Education
Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, or an appropriate scientific or public health field
Certification in Hazardous materials management (CHMM) preferred.
Required Experience
Four or more years of professional experience as hazardous materials manager including at least two years of program development in a research university or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
