Basic Function
Pharmacy Technician is primarily responsible for supplying Pharmaceuticals as efficiently, safely and economically as possible throughout JHAH. Pharmacy Technician will be responsible for Dispensing outpatient prescriptions or inpatient unit doses, compounding sterile intravenous preparations, compounding extemporaneous preparations and filling user unit requisitions under the supervision of a Pharmacist or senior pharmacy technician. Pharmacy Technician can work to replenishing medications through new technologies of Automated Drug Dispensing (ADD) Machines, Pharmacy Technician can also maintain and work as troubleshooter for ADD machines. Pharmacy Technician must closely monitor the quality, safety and use of pharmaceuticals. Pharmacy Technician must adhere to the Kingdom laws and regulations regarding the profession of pharmacy practice.
Scope
Pharmacy Technician is responsible for filling, compounding (when applicable) and dispensing medications and preparations for JHAH outpatients and inpatients per prescription and/or medication order by physicians and dentists in accordance with the formulary, as developed by Pharmacy Services Division to meet the standards set by JHAH, Saudi Arab Gove
ment and JCIA under the supervision of a Pharmacist. Incumbent follows proper handling and storage procedures of medications and can recognize physical and chemical changes what may occur during storage to avoid dispensing of such medications. Incumbent should be familiar with the approximate 1500 medications on the JHAH formulary and is expected to work shifts/hours to meet the operational requirements of the respective unit/group. Pharmacy Technician and Pharmacist will be available to provide professional and technical advice and instruction but the incumbent is expected to exercise due caution in dispensing medications and follow established guidelines. The incumbent will provide work direction for Pharmacy Aides, senior Pharmacy Aides and clerical staff and reports administratively to a unit supervisor or group leader.

INTERNAL: Frequent contact with other Pharmacy personnel in the respective unit to solve or clarify professional, administrative or technical problems.
EXTERNAL: Frequent contact with out-patients regarding their medications
Principal Duties
Dispenses medications to JHAH outpatients/inpatients per outpatient prescription or inpatient medication order under the supervision of a Pharmacist or Senior pharmacist.
Compounds sterile intravenous preparations when prescribed following professionally accepted techniques and guidelines under the supervision of a Pharmacist or Senior pharmacist.
Compounds extemporaneous preparations when prescribed following professionally accepted techniques and guidelines under the supervision of a Pharmacist or Senior pharmacist.
Requests, received, transfers and adjusts medication stock and maintains computerized records per established guidelines to ensure drug availability and correct computer inventory accurately reflecting physical inventory (when applicable to the job).
Makes daily rounds to nursing units (when applicable to job) to replenish narcotic/controlled drug levels and to check the nursing records of these medications.
Replenishes and maintains medications at Automated Drug Dispensing machines.
Supervises the repackaging, labelling and documentation of medications for unit dose distribution and/or outpatient bulk distribution.
Fills None- Sterile compounding requisitions and maintains proper records of such action.
Fills unit dose patient cassettes (when applicable to job) per unit dose drug distribution policies.
Inspects nursing drug cabinets and removes any outdated or deteriorated medications.
Answers drug related inquiries received from physicians, dentists, nurses. Those inquiries which cannot be answered with certainty are to be referred to the Pharmacist or Senior pharmacist.
Assists in the training of new Pharmacy Technician staff as per the direction of the unit supervisor or group Senior Pharmacist.
Performs specialty pharmacy activities, as delegated and trained.
Performs other miscellaneous duties, as directed by the unit supervisor or group Senior Pharmacist
Education/Experience
A Pharmacy Diploma Degree (minimum of three-year’s academy course after High school) by recognized Saudi Arab Gove
ment Health Institute for Saudi Arab nationals or equivalent.
Minimum of four years pharmacy related work experience at JHAH or recognized health institution.
Certifications/Other requirements as applicable
Licensed to practice pharmacy Technician job in Saudi Arabia.
Good oral and written communication skills in English.
Knowledge of Saudi Arab laws and regulations is preferred.
